Names the type of journal identifier or the authority that created a particular journal identifier, since there may be several “unique identifiers” provided for an article. For example, the value “doi” would indicate that the identifier is a Digital Object Identifier. The value “publisher-id” would indicate that the publisher of the article assigned this particular identifier, but would say nothing about what kind of identifier it is. Similarly, the value “pmc” would indicate that PubMed Central had provided the journal identifier.
