<journal-id>

Journal Identifier

Definition

Short code that represents the journal. In NLM PMC and PMC-derived internal processing, this element contains an alternative to, or short form of, the journal title to identify the journal domain.

Remarks

Note: Outside of PMC and PMC-derived internal processing, this is a rare element. Most journal DTDs use the Abbreviated Journal Title <abbrev-journal-title> element to hold the short version of the journal title rather than this element. Most journal DTDs use the ISSN <issn> as a journal identifier rather than this element. A very few journal DTDs have assigned identifiers (usually numeric) to journal titles; this element can be used for non-PMC journals to hold those identifiers. In PMC processing, this element is the equivalent to, and usually used instead of, the <abbrev-journal-title> element.

NLM PMC Authoring Note: The PMC identifiers in this element come from an authorized list, so that each journal code is unique within the PMC system. The PMC identifier is the PMC short abbreviation of the journal title, which is used to identify the journal domain. The information in this element may be repeated as the Abbreviated Journal Title <abbrev-journal-title>, or the publisher’s abbreviation may be used for the <abbrev-journal-title> element.
