Table Wrapper

Definition

Used to hold a complete table, that is, not only the rows and columns that make up a table but also the table’s caption or title, list of table footnotes, alternative descriptions for accessibility, etc.

Remarks

Within the Table Wrapper element, the row and column tags that describe the table cells are defined by one of the popular “standard” table models, for example, the XHTML table model or the OASIS Exchange (CALS) table model.

The extended table model of this element has also been designed to allow for a “table” that is just a graphic or a list, rather than the explicit rows and columns of a table element such as XHTML <table>.

Authoring and Conversion Note: Many journal DTDs use an element called “Table Footnote” (with a tag such as <tblfn>) for footnotes inside a table. This DTD uses <fn> inside tables as well as everywhere else, relying instead on context to differentiate table footnotes. Footnotes inside a Table Wrapper are assumed to be footnotes to the table and part of the table, i.e., displayed at the bottom of the table, not at the bottom of the page or otherwise separated from the display of the table.

Related Elements

The <table> element is an element defined by a public table model such as the XHTML Table Model or the OASIS Exchange (CALS) table model. This element is not, in itself, a full table, but only the rows and columns portions of a table. A full table may have other features such as a title, caption, table footnotes, etc. The <table-wrap> element contains the full table. A full table may or may not include a <table> element within it, because other constructions, such as two-part lists, may also be given table titles, captions, etc.

The standard XHMTL model has been modified to remove the <caption> element from within the <table> element, because, in the Archiving and Interchange DTD Suite, the <caption> element has been made part of the Table Wrapper <table-wrap> element.

For the same reason, the %titles; Parameter Entity has been set to the null string (""), because the table title <title> is also part of the Table Wrapper <table-wrap>. No other changes were made to the XHTML table content model.
