Indicates what kind of article this is, for example, a research article, a commentary, a book or product review, a case report, a calendar, etc.
All articles should be assigned a type if possible. If the article is not one of the listed types, or the type of article cannot be determined, the “other” attribute value may be used or the attribute may be omitted.
When the article is a commentary on another article, for example, a correction or addendum, this attribute is metadata for the commentary itself; it does NOT identify the kind of article that is being corrected or amended.
This attribute may be used on the top-most <article> element to provide article typing information for retrieval or record keeping. Many publishers indicate the type of article, either in an attribute like this one or with unique element declarations (such as <review> or <calendar>). This attribute has been designed to preserve that information.
|abstract||The article itself is an abstract of a paper or presentation that has been presented or published separately.|
|addendum||Additional information about or clarification of another published article. (The similar value “correction” corrects an error in previously published material.)|
|announcement||Material being announced in the publication; such material may or may not be directly related to the publication.|
|article-commentary||The article has, as its subject or focus, another article or articles; this article comments on the other article(s). For example, for a controversial article, the editors of the publication might invite an author of an opposing opinion to comment on the first article and publish the two together.|
|book-review||Review or analysis of one or more printed or electronic books. (The similar value “product-review” is a review or analysis of a product, service, or website.)|

|brief-report||A short and/or rapid announcement of research results.|
|calendar||A list of events.|
|case-report||Case study, case report, or other description of a case.|

|discussion||Invited discussion related to a specific article or issue.|
|editorial||Opinion piece, policy statement, or general commentary, typically written by staff of the publication. (The similar value “article-commentary” is reserved for a commentary on a specific article or articles.)|

|research-article||Research article, usually describing original research. (The related value “review-article” describes a literature review, research summary, or state-of-the-art article.)|
