pubmed_250101.dtd: IndexingMethod attribute

Introduced with the 2017 DTD, IndexingMethod specifies the method used to assign Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) to the citation. For more information, see the technical bulletin, Incorporating Values for Indexing Method in MEDLINE/PubMed XML.

The valid values for IndexingMethod are:

• Curated - MeSH indexing is provided algorithmically and a human reviewed (and possibly modified) the algorithm results
• Automated - MeSH indexing is provided algorithmically
• Manual - MeSH indexing is provided by humans with no algorithmic suggestions

IndexingMethod value "Manual" was added in the 2025 DTD. From 2017 - 2024 if the IndexingMethod was not present, the indexing method was fully human indexed. In the 2025 baseline release, the value "Manual" was added retrospectively to all citations where IndexingMethod was not present.
